What is Duvet Cover?
Buying bedding online can be confusing, especially when it comes to duvet covers. You can easily mistake a photo of a duvet cover for a full duvet set and be disappointed when you find out the insert isn’t included. In fact 22% of product returns are because the item looks different in person according to GWI.
What is a Duvet Cover & Why Isn’t It Sold as One Product?
A duvet set is two pieces in its simplest form: the duvet – a quilted blanket filled with natural or synthetic materials and the duvet cover that goes over the duvet and has buttons, snaps or zippers to close. Whether you have a feather duvet or synthetic duvets, the choice of filling can affect the washing and maintenance process.
But why aren’t duvet and cover sold as one product? There are three reasons:
- Design Flexibility – With a duvet cover, you can change the look of your bedding without changing the duvet. For example, you can go from cozy fall bedding to holiday bedding without having to store bulky comforters. It’s an easy and space saving way to change up your room.
- Comfort Variety – The fabric of the duvet cover changes the feel. On a cold winter night you might prefer a flannel cover, while lighter cotton would be perfect for warm spring days. The cover lets you adapt to different seasons or personal comfort preferences without having to buy multiple duvets.
- Hygiene & Protection – Duvet covers act as a protective barrier, protecting your duvet from stains, tears and everyday wear. While duvets do need occasional washing, using a cover means you can wash the duvet less often which can help extend its life. It is important to check care labels and avoid dry cleaning due to the harmful chemicals involved.
But if you prefer simplicity over all this - you can buy a comforter which is the same as a duvet set, quilted with the filling evenly distributed. A comforter is ready to use as is - it doesn’t need a duvet cover or any kind of cover. But you can use a duvet cover on a comforter if you want.
What is a Duvet Set?
A duvet set is a collection of bedding items that typically includes a duvet cover, two pillowcases, and sometimes a fitted sheet. The duvet cover is designed to fit snugly over a duvet or comforter, providing both protection and style. The pillowcases match the duvet cover in terms of design and material, creating a cohesive look for your bed. Duvet sets are often sold together as a package, making it easy to coordinate your bedroom decor and ensure a harmonious appearance.
Benefits of Buying a Duvet Set
Buying a duvet set can offer several benefits. Firstly, it saves you time and effort in searching for individual bedding items that match. Since duvet sets are designed to be coordinated, you can be confident that the duvet cover, pillowcases, and fitted sheet will all complement each other perfectly. Additionally, purchasing a duvet set can be more cost-effective than buying each item separately. Many retailers offer discounts on duvet sets, making it an affordable option for those looking to refresh their bedroom decor without breaking the bank.
Why Duvets and Duvet Covers are Sold Separately
While duvet sets are convenient, there are times when it’s better to buy a duvet and duvet cover separately. For instance, if you already have a duvet that you love but want to update the look, purchasing a new duvet cover can be a more economical choice. Additionally, some people prefer to mix and match different brands or materials to suit their personal preferences. Buying duvets and duvet covers separately allows for greater customization, ensuring you get exactly what you want for your bedding needs.
How to Choose the Right Duvet and Cover Size
If you’re buying both a duvet and cover at the same time, buy them from the same brand so they match in size. Brands have their own sizing charts so this guarantees a perfect fit. But what if you already have a duvet and want to buy a new cover?
Here’s what to do:
- Check the label – Most duvets have a label that lists the size, so start there.
- Measure your duvet – If the label is missing, you can measure the duvet yourself. We’ve already shown you three ways to do this using just your phone and the internet so it’s easy to get the dimensions right.
- Fit it to your height – If all else fails, fit your duvet to your height and bed size. In Germany there are four common duvet sizes so it’s a bit easier to figure out:
- 135x200 cm – Single-person duvets (twin or twin XL beds)
- 155x220 cm – Two-person duvets (Full or Double beds)
- 200x200 cm – Two-person duvets (Queen beds)
- 240x200 cm – Two-person duvets (King beds)
Caring for Your Duvet Set
To keep your duvet set looking its best, it’s essential to follow proper care instructions. Most duvet covers can be machine washed and dried, but always check the care label to ensure you’re using the right temperature and cycle. For duvets, it’s recommended to wash them every 3-6 months, depending on usage and personal preference. When washing your duvet, use a mild detergent and avoid fabric softener or bleach, as these can damage the filling. To dry your duvet, use a low heat setting on your tumble dryer or air dry it outside on a sunny day. Proper care will help prolong the life of your duvet set and keep it feeling fresh and cozy.
How Often to Wash Duvets and Change a Duvet Cover
To maintain cleanliness and hygiene, it’s essential to establish a regular washing routine for your duvet set. The frequency of washing will depend on factors such as personal preference, allergies, and environmental conditions. As a general guideline, duvet covers should be washed every 1-2 weeks, just like your bedsheets. This helps to remove dirt, sweat, and allergens that can accumulate over time.
For duvets, it’s recommended to wash them every 3-6 months. However, if you have allergies or live in a humid climate, you may need to wash your duvet more frequently to prevent the buildup of dust mites and mold. To keep your duvet fresh between washes, consider using a duvet cover and airing out the duvet regularly by shaking it out and hanging it outside in the sun.
Understanding the differences between a duvet, duvet cover, and a duvet set will help you make an informed decision when shopping for bedding. Knowing how to care for your duvet set will ensure it remains fresh, clean, and comfortable, providing a cozy night's sleep for years to come.
